Project 2008 12mtr Barrel Vault/ 109 James Street, Northbridge, Perth, WA

This project was finished recently, and this will help you understand the benefits of our system.

You will be able to see how quick the installation process is with our 74mm polycarbonate system, and how construction time is dramatically reduced. Installation time on this project was 3 days and five men were available on site. The steelwork was already erected and in place.

Everbright E610 Opal was installed above the Northbridge Plaza at 109 James Street, Northbridge Perth. Everbright E610 was extruded and supplied in 12.3mtr curved panels and in 600mm configurations. Our panels simply clip together making the installation process rapid, as our product only requires to be joined every 600mm on site. E610 free spanned 12mtr, incorporating Locking System 2.5 (see design loads). The total area was 369sqm, the curved panel length was 12.3mtr x 30mtr with a 1100mm midpoint rise.

The front fix method was used on this project, as this is the preferred fixing method for larger span curved projects and is different from the top fix method. The front fix method provides more strength and stability. On this particular project the steelwork was set at a 20degree angle to accommodate our panels.

E610 fixing accessories supplied as standard with large curved roofs;
a) Eaves angle EL16 supplied in 6mtr lengths and measures 40mm x 40mm x 4mm thick.
b) M8 x30 stainless steel bolts EL26.
c) E610 seals EL136.
d) Aluminium sleeves EL24 preassembled within the panels during the manufacturing process at 300mm centers.

The brief from our client for this project was for a product that was modern, extremely durable, had superior free span capabilities and long life span. Additionally the clients focus was for a simply practical solution and long term replacement for the old existing roof.
Over the years they had experienced many problems associated with the old roof and therefore had to be very diligent with their research for the new replacement roof, due to all previous experiences.
Furthermore due to location in Northbridge the replacement roof had to be simple to install and construction time had to be rapid, due to all associated issues with construction in Northbridge town center.
After much review our 74mm polycarbonate system was selected, as our system is very well suited for a development of this nature.
Everbright E610’s main benefits for this project where it's superior panel strength, free span capabilities, durability, fully trafficable, advanced thermal performance and simply construction.
Our 74mm polycarbonate system minimized structural requirements and free spanned the 12mtr required for this project, when incorporating locking system LS2.5 making it one of the strongest translucent materials available in the world today.
The client decide to leave the existing structure due to several factors including additional demolition and construction costs.

E610 LS2.5 Weight and dead load calculations;
Locking System LS2.5 = 14 kg/sqm with a dead load of 0.142kN/sqm.
See design loads, which shows you in more detail the different locking systems available.
E610 polycarbonate panels incorporate as standard detailing an excellent safety factor. All loading criteria are based on 0.75kN/sqm and a 50% safety factor as part of a standard specification detailing.

Our polycarbonate system give a seamless and continuous line, with no steel frame work spoiling the visual effect. E610 Integral locking bars hide the aspect of where a panel starts and where it finishes, so it becomes a continuous system giving a uniformed and conformed design feature. Creating an architectural flare, that isn't possible with any other polycarbonate system available on the market. Other systems would necessitate the need for a framed grid work support system across the entire roof. On this project our system only needed to be secured to both sides of the eaves structure, all the joints are self sealing once the integral locking bar is fitted.

Our EL16 eaves angle is drilled on site at 200mm centers and is designed to fit our E610 panels. Once the eaves angle is secured, our panels drop in behind the eaves angle where the fixing bolts we supply are used to secure the roof to the angle.

Our 74mm polycarbonate panels are also fully trafficable, which makes a huge difference to construction time, and helps with general service and maintenance of the roof.
The construction process with E610 is very simple and is less time consuming to install on site. We can advise that there was a significant cost saving on the structure requirements with our system on this project.

Major Advantages:

  • Superior free span capabilities (see design loads)
  • Fully Trafficable.
  • Light weight product. Each panel could be easily lifted and locked into place on site.
  • E610 supplied in one complete flat or curved 12mtr length.
  • Less structure means less shadows created and as such the natural light translucency is at its full potential.
  • Great visual architectural effect.
  • Silicone free system. No possible leakage where product is sealed.
  • Translucent so that it maximizes natural light without excessive glaze.
  • Great thermal performance and sound reduction.
  • Self cleaning dome shape profile.

The geometry details on this project were:
Free span 12mtr / Internal radius 16.4mtr
Slope 20 degrees
Midpoint height 1.1mtr
Curved length with eaves 12.3mtr
Length of drip nose eaves 90mm

This site is situated at 109 James Street, Northbridge, Perth and this project can be viewed due to this being a public facility.
